Five Formula 1 Winners & Losers: Mexican Grand Prix
The Mexican Grand Prix sure gave us fireworks, and lots of controversy.
It was also a fitting performance from the nation’s beloved F1 driver considering how this season is going.
Here are the winners & losers from the Mexican Grand Prix.
Losers
5. Esteban Ocon
There’s getting beaten by your teammate, and then there’s what Pierre Gasly did to Esteban Ocon this weekend.
It was a demolishment.
4. Yuki Tsunoda
Yuki’s performances haven’t been great for a while now, including a bad qualifying session and an early crash which ended his race.
This is a long slump for the Japanese driver.
3. Max Verstappen
Verstappen with wheel to wheel racing is still very, very reckless.
This was shown once again on Sunday, as Verstappen went over the line and got 20 seconds of penalties for an incident on track with Lando Norris.
It hurt Norris’ chances of winning the race, which is obviously what Max wants at the end of the day considering his championship lead, but it was still a bit too far.
2. Oscar Piastri
Piastri has had a few tough races considering the pace of that McLaren car, and it could be completely devastating to their championship fight, as Ferrari is right behind them now.
If Piastri doesn’t find his form again soon, McLaren could lose both championships.
1. Sergio Perez
It’s just over with Checo at Red Bull.
It stinks. It’s unfortunate. I don’t love it myself.
But it’s over.
He has absolutely no confidence in the car whatsoever.
Red Bull expects championships, and he’s actively hurting their chances.
It’s just a wrap, unfortunately.
Winners
5. Pierre Gasly
If the teammate you trounced is on the losers list, then you surely deserve a spot on the winners list.
4. Charles Leclerc
Another great race for Leclerc, who secured another podium for Ferrari in their push for the constructors championship.
3. Nico Hulkenberg
Hulk has had a great two weeks with Haas, as he scored another 9th place for two crucial points.
The gap for Haas to claim 6th in the standings over VCARB gets wider.
2. Kevin Magnussen
And it’s been helped even more by Kevin Magnussen, who had yet another great weekend with a 7th place finish and 6 points for the team.
K-Mag only has 4 races left in his Formula 1 career.
He’s going out on a hot streak.
1. Carlos Sainz
Just a perfect weekend for Carlos Sainz.
Pole position, an excellent move to reclaim first place, and a win.
Sainz is losing his seat at a top ride, as Lewis Hamilton is coming in to replace the Spaniard, and Sainz is heading to Williams next season.
Wins are going to be hard to come by for the rest of Carlos’ career, assuming he stays at a lower level of team.
And he knew it, as he spent time taking it all in and enjoying it to its fullest.
Good for Carlos.
