Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 9

Before Saturday’s slate of games, someone (I don’t remember who and can’t be bothered to go find out #JournalisticIntegrity) pointed out that only 2007 had more ranked teams losing to unranked teams than this year.

That changed on Saturday with five ranked teams losing to unranked teams.

College football is better than the NFL.

I know everyone has their own opinions. That’s fine.

I don’t care though. College is just better.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake Forest, who is undefeated, crushed Duke, who is bad.

So why is it impressive?

Because, for the first time EVER, Wake Forest is an AP top 10 team.

Congrats, Deacons!

4. West Virginia Mountaineers

WVU may not be a perennial powerhouse, but that fan base can be ruthless.

With WVU struggling early and going into the bye week with a 2-4 record, many fans were questioning if Neal Brown was the right coach in Morgantown.

Since the bye week, Brown gave up playcalling duties, the offense looks much better and WVU is 2-0, including a win over ranked Iowa State.

This is more-so what Mountaineers fans expected to see. Now we see if it’s sustainable.

3. Mississippi State Bulldogs

A good Saturday for the Tenerowicz children, as Mississippi State pulled off a dominating upset win over 12th ranked Kentucky.

Will Rogers rules.

2. Miami Hurricanes

Typically, in the wild world of the ACC, the Pitt Panthers ruin someone’s season with an upset win.

In fact, it was Pitt a few years ago who ruined Miami’s perfect season attempt.

So it’s only fitting that Pitt, with one foot in the door of the ACC Championship game, faltered to Miami of all teams.

Karma’s a b word which I could probably say in this post because nobody is paying me to write this and it’s my own website, but I won’t anyway.

I will say E.S.P. though.

1. Michigan State Spartans

Nobody expected Michigan State to be this good this season.

In fact, a lot of people wondered how good they were at all.

And when the Spartans went down by 14 to their biggest rival at home, a lot of people seemed to have their answer.

Mel Tucker’s boys don’t care, though.

The defense turned it up a notch, Kenneth Walker ran wild and the Spartans beat Michigan again.

Sometimes, you have to just accept that you’re cursed.

We talk about how Ohio State has Jim Harbaugh’s number.

It looks like Michigan State does now too.
