Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 8

Let this weekend be a lesson.
You are not too big for your britches.
Here is this weeks top 5.
Honorable Mention: Louisville Cardinals
Look, Louisville went on the road and upset Miami in a big win, and in any other week that would make them number 1 on the list. But there are two reasons that they are not.
First, this was the perfect game for Miami to lose. You could pinpoint it from a mile away.
Second, it doesn’t fit the theme I’m going for, and it’s my list so deal with it.
But it is worth mentioning that Jeff Brohm’s boys got a huge victory on the road.
5. Michigan Wolverines
All week long, fans were clamoring for Washington to be ranked.
After all, they were 5-1! Why weren’t they ranked?
Maybe they should have focused more on Michigan, who took down the Huskies 24-7.
4. Minnesota Golden Gophers
All week long, there was talk about Matt Rhule leaving Nebraska to go to Penn State.
After all, he went there. He is a Pennsylvania guy. It just makes sense.
But that took a hit on Friday night, as Minnesota tore Nebraska apart 24-6.
Keep your eyes forward, Matt.
3. Stanford Cardinal
After Florida State was (very wrongly) left out of the college football playoff in 2023, FSU fans and boosters started to discuss that the ACC is below them at this stage.
They are too big of a brand and make too much money for the rest of the conference to ruin their chances at playing for a championship.
One specific thing they mentioned, was the disdain of the ACC adding Cal, Stanford, and SMU to the conference, saying it diluted a conference already not taken seriously.
Well, if you’re going to think that, maybe you should go out there and beat them.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, as Stanford got a big 20-13 win and put Mike Norvell on a scorching hot seat.
2. UAB Blazers
All week long, Memphis discussed how they were a premier American Conference team, and they play the higher end schools of the American Conference too often because it draws eyeballs.
But they weren’t focused on the task ahead, which was a UAB team with interim coach Alex Mortensen taking over for Trent Dilfer who was fired earlier in the week.
The result? A huge upset win for UAB 31-24.
It was the largest upset victory in a coach’s first game since 1978.
Memphis hasn’t been in a conference championship game this decade.
Maybe focus on that before talking about being too good for the conference.
1. Arizona State Sun Devils
Earlier this week, the Big 12 announced that Texas Tech would get a penalty and fines if fans threw tortilla’s onto the field, which is a beloved tradition in Lubbock.
That’s really dumb of the Big 12, frankly.
But the response from Tech fans this week was anger, rage, and thinking Texas Tech doesn’t need the Big 12 anymore with the money they have.
Why not go to the SEC? They get more money that way, and because of the donor funding they have, they simply don’t need the Big 12 anymore.
But they got a rude awakening when Arizona State, the defending conference champions, took down the Red Raiders to give them their first loss of the season.
Not too big for the conference, I guess.
Let this week be a lesson for college football and college football fans.
This sport does not care how good you are or how much money you have.
It cares about making you look like a damn fool.
