Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 7

Usually, hype is wrong in college football.
The weeks where people say the slate is a complete dud ends up being fantastic, and the weeks where people say to stop what you’re doing and watch every game end up being kind of underwhelming.
That was not the case this week.
The slate was awesome, and the games lived up to it.
And with that, here is the top 5 from week 7.
5. Idaho Vandals
Idaho is 0-5 against teams not from Montana.
Idaho is now 2-0 against teams from Montana, after the Vandals upset the Grizzlies just a few weeks after they upset the Bobcats.
Montana and Montana State are FCS title contenders.
But apparently Idaho is too tough of a task.
4. SEC Propaganda (Tennessee Volunteers & Auburn Tigers)
Look, I don’t like it.
But I have to hand it to the folks of the SEC fandom.
Over, and over, and over again, we hear talk that the SEC is so hard and tough because they beat up on each other all the time.
I don’t personally think that’s true, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen sometimes.
Because just one week after Alabama and Georgia played a slugfest, both laid eggs against rivals this week, with Georgia losing to Auburn due to sloppy play, and Alabama getting run all over by Tennessee.
For this week, I’ll drink the kool-aid.
3. Florida Gators
Texas has some serious issues offensively, but that shouldn’t take away Florida’s key win in Austin against the Longhorns, a win that should’ve been even more if Florida didn’t have one of the worst special teams performances I can remember.
They just flat out outplayed them, and with a backup quarterback too.
It was a win the Gators really needed after it looked like their season was taking a turn for the worse.
2. Houston Cougars
College football is all about moments.
There are moments where you see something and say to yourself “this is a big turning point.”
Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it’s bad.
Sometimes it’s about a player. Sometimes it’s about a team.
On Saturday night, Houston had their moment.
In front of a packed crowd, which is tough for Houston to do, against a top 25 Oklahoma State team, QB Connor Weigman and the Cougars went toe to toe and upset Oklahoma State to move to 6-1 on the year.
That performance, that QB play, Willie Fritz as head coach, and a favorable schedule coming up?
That was Houston’s moment.
1. BYU Cougars
And BYU made sure they had theirs too.
People will talk about the missed PI call, the one second left, the weird spike fumble thing.
I get all of that. It’s fair criticism.
But it doesn’t take away that Provo, Utah was an insane environment, Bear Bachmeier played the game of his life, and BYU set themselves up beautifully to make the college football playoff this season.
This is a new era of college football, and BYU looks like they might become a mainstay of it.
