Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 6

It was an awesome day of college football.

So many excellent games, one of my favorite rivalries lived up to the hype, and we have quite a few new entries into the top 25.

But for this top 5, we have some familiar faces.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

So much for last year being a fluke for Jake Dickert, huh?

After a debut 9 wins in Winston Salem, the Demon Deacons are 5-1 after a win on the road against NC State, and are in the top 25 for the first time this season.

We got ourselves a ball coach, folks.

4. Kentucky Wildcats

Speaking of ball coaches, Will Stein has something going here in Lexington, after Kentucky upset LSU by going for 2 in overtime, one week after going for 2 in overtime to beat South Carolina as well.

I did not think he would be able to turn Kentucky football around this quickly.

A massive credit to him and his staff, and the future for Kentucky.

3. South Carolina Gamecocks

This is what I think most of us expected to see when LaNorris Sellers popped onto the scene a few years ago.

Sellers was excellent in South Carolina’s huge road upset over Florida, and may just be the catalyst that saves not only South Carolina’s season, but Shane Beamer’s job.

2. UCLA Bruins

You want to win football games?

Hire a coach from JMU.

It worked for Indiana with Curt Cignetti, and it’s worked wonders so far with UCLA and Bob Chesney, who are now 5-0 after their road win over Oregon.

Sure, it’s only two coaches, so a small sample size.

But the results are the results.

Hard to go against them.

1. Oklahoma Sooners

Red River rarely ever lets us down.

Texas was number 1 in the country, looking like a great team, and ready to twist the knife into a struggling, underperforming, underwhelming Oklahoma Sooners team.

But the Sooners defense had other thoughts, making Texas’ offense in the second half completely non existent, including a pick 6 in the 4th quarter, and an interception with 20 seconds left to set up the game winning field goal.

Look, rivalry games are weird.

Does this mean Texas is going to fall apart? No.

Does this mean Oklahoma’s glaring issues offensively are fixed and they’ll be a playoff contender? Absolutely not.

But they have the bragging rights for a whole year now.

And that, my friends, is why college football is the best.
