Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 2

Last week, the G6 and FCS schools made opening statements.

This week, it was time for some P4 teams to make theirs.

Here is the top 5 from week 2.

5. Boston College Eagles

We can’t start this list without giving love to Boston College, who, on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, defeated Rutgers wearing their Red Bandana jerseys for Welles Crowther, a former Boston College lacrosse player who helped many escape the towers on that day using his trademark red bandana to protect himself from the smoke.

A win over Rutgers is far from the most impressive thing in the world, but it was a great win on a very special night for the school, and his family.

4. Duke Blue Devils

Duke, the reigning ACC champions (which I feel people keep forgetting about), just continue winning.

This time, going into Champaign, Illinois, and beating a tough Illinois team to move to 2-0.

Is Duke good?

Frankly, I’m still not sure.

But they keep winning!

Frankly, that’s all that matters.

3. Michigan Wolverines

In week 1, Michigan had a, let’s say, controversial victory over Western Michigan.

But there was nothing controversial about their win in week 2.

The Wolverines defense completely stifled and shut down John Mateer, and Bryce Underwood made the huge plays with his legs we expect to see in a Kyle Whittingham offense, and Michigan upset Oklahoma 17-10.

Make a statement in week 2.

2. Texas Longhorns

This was expected to be a statement game for Texas.

After all, last season had high expectations, and began with a massive dud in Columbus, Ohio which led to a pretty tough season.

But the year ended very strongly for Texas, and they welcomed Ohio State into Austin, Texas this time, trying to build off of that strong end to the season.

And it started out, frankly, terribly.

Ohio State was feeding Jeremiah Smith at will, Arch Manning was playing extremely poorly, and going into the 4th quarter, Texas was down 23-3.

And then a switch flipped.

Arch played like the top prospect he was expected to be, they had three touchdown drives of 12 plays or more, and just completely wore down the Ohio State defense to take the lead with under a minute to go and get the comeback win.

In many ways, the game was a microcosm of last years Longhorn’s season.

Let’s see how it progresses.

1. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Remember what I said at the very end of the Michigan segment?

The Eric Morris era at Oklahoma State started disastrously, losing to Tulsa.

Now, he had to make his home debut against an Oregon Ducks team who were heavy favorites, and with a fanbase that is already down on his tenure from what they’ve seen.

But you know how to shut them up?

Make a statement.

And that’s exactly what the Cowboys did, stunning Oregon 39-31 with a game that showed the power conference world just how good Drew Mestemaker is.

The Cowboys are now officially off and running.
