Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 13

Rivalry weekend is just another reminder of how much better college football is than the NFL.

You simply do not get the same atmosphere from the crowds. You just don’t.

So, for one final time this regular season, let’s see the top 5.

5. Washington State Cougars

Wazzu hadn’t beaten UW since 2012, and they destroyed the Huskies Friday night to end that streak, and cap off a very good 7-5 season considering how tumultuous this season was with the Nick Rolovich situation.

All capped off perfectly by the fans rushing the field and planting the flag right on the UW logo.

The only reason this broken streak isn’t higher is because UW isn’t very good this year.

But still, what a moment for a bunch of kids who really deserve it.

4. North Texas Mean Green

Look.

North Texas beat 11-0 UTSA to not only end the Roadrunner’s perfect season, but to make them 6-6 and bowl eligible as well.

That’s impressive.

It doesn’t mean I’m happy about it.

3. NC State Wolfpack

NC State was staring down the barrel of missing the ACC title game due to a crushing loss to rival UNC.

But the Wolfpack fought back, scoring 2 touchdowns in 26 seconds to turn it around and get the win.

And none of it mattered in the end because Wake Forest destroyed Boston College and will go to the ACC title game instead.

But hey, at least they beat UNC!

2. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Mike Gundy struggled against Oklahoma as a player.

He struggled against them as an assistant coach.

Then, as head coach, he had a 2-14 record heading into Bedlam on Saturday night.

Even during the game, it looked like Oklahoma State was going to fall short to OU again.

But not this time.

This time, the Cowboys didn’t buckle.

They fought back and got the win over the Sooners that they desperately needed to end up in the Big 12 championship game next Saturday against Baylor.

1. Michigan Wolverines

Around this time last year I said it would be foolish for Michigan to give up on Jim Harbaugh simply because he never beat Ohio State.

Realistically, 2016 and 2018 were the only years to criticize Harbaugh for never winning.

Other than that, Ohio State was simply a better team.

But many wanted him fired.

Despite all the turmoil of last year, Michigan came into The Game with a 10-1 record and a pass rush to make C.J. Stroud uncomfortable.

Not only did the pass rush do exactly that, but Harbaugh out coached Ryan Day the entire day.

It’s the kind of win to remind people that Michigan is in good hands under Jim Harbaugh, and they’re one win away from their first ever appearance in the college football playoff.
