Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 12

Photo by Daniel Lin from The Charlotte Observer

We’re now just one week away from rivalry week, and there are some games with HUGE playoff implications.

The perfect time for me to go overseas!

But regardless, week 12 still found a way to impress.

Here is this weeks top 5.

5. Arizona Wildcats

I’ve only been doing these lists for a few years, but I don’t think I remember another team making it as much as Arizona has this year.

And why wouldn’t they? Jedd Fisch’s team has done nothing but impress all year.

But the big narrative was that they hadn’t done it against an actual good team.

Saturday, they welcomed Utah into their house, and decided to smack them around like a cat playing with its toy.

The Wildcats are good.

4. Northwestern Wildcats

And in a year where the Wildcats lost their coach and were expected to be even worse than they were BEFORE their coach was fired, Northwestern is bowl eligible.

Insane.

Good for them, though.

They deserve it.

3. UNLV Rebels

Air Force was the darling of the Mountain West this year, but after a third consecutive loss, they now sit behind none other than UNLV in the standings and may miss the title game all together.

And who would have thought? UNLV is sitting at 9-2 after not having a winning season since 2013.

Barry Odom deserves coach of the year votes.

2. Appalachian State Mountaineers

All week leading into this game, James Madison was talking about how they were being screwed by the NCAA by not being allowed to go to their conference championship game or a bowl game (they were).

What they forgot was they had a game to play this weekend, and App State had no problem reminding them, beating JMU in overtime and ruining the perfect season for the Dukes.

App State has had a frustrating year, but things look to be turning around.

1. New Mexico State Aggies

For the second straight year, New Mexico State went into the home of a Hugh Freeze coached team as 20+ underdogs.

For the second straight year, New Mexico State put a whooping on ‘em.

Beating Liberty last year was one thing, though.

Beating Auburn, even if it is a rebuilding Auburn team, is a whole other thing.
