NFL Week 5 Takeaways

Look, I do these in chronological order. We know what game is coming first.

Let’s just get it over with.

Colts defeat Broncos 12-9

The last play summarized everything wrong with Denver.

  1. A stupid play call on 4th and 1

  2. Russell Wilson ignoring a wide open man because he isn’t going through his progressions.

  3. KJ Hamler, 5 weeks into the season, throwing a (justified) temper tantrum on the field.

The Broncos are, pretty easily, the worst team in the AFC West.

It’s broken. And it’s not even fun broken. It’s boring broken.

Giants defeat Packers 27-22

Brian Daboll has Daniel Jones as his quarterback, a bunch of wide receivers that should probably just be quality backups, and the team is 4-1.

He might be brilliant.

Bills defeat Steelers 38-3

This was um.

Hard to watch.

The Bills are amazing, and the Steelers defense without TJ Watt might as well just not exist.

This one was doomed from the start.

Chargers defeat Browns 30-28

The Chargers tried their absolute hardest to lose this game by going for it on 4th and 1 in their own territory up by 2 and failing, but were saved from themselves with the Browns missing the last second kick.

I get being aggressive, but there’s limits to what I would do.

Brandon Staley passed that line.

Vikings defeat Bears 29-22

The Bears went down early, and finally let Justin Fields loose a little bit, and he played well.

It’s a sign that with better weapons and a better line, Fields should be fine.

That has to be comforting for Bears fans.

Patriots defeat Lions 29-0

I like the Lions coaching staff and the culture they’re trying to create, but you have to win games.

I’m not a big Jared Goff fan, so I’m sure a change at QB will help them.

But still, 1-4 ain’t gonna cut it.

Saints defeat Seahawks 39-32

I took 3 things away from the Seahawks loss on Sunday.

  1. Losing helps their draft stock, but they’re also not tanking which means they’re fun to watch.

  2. Their 2022 rookie class looks amazing so far.

  3. Geno Smith has been remarkable.

That third one may not seem important. After all, Geno is 32 years old. He’s not the QB of the future.

But what it does mean is the Seahawks can draft defense that they desperately need, find a QB like Sam Hartman from Wake Forest in later rounds and let him sit behind Geno.

Titans defeat Commanders 21-17

A WVU grad intercepted my arch nemesis Carson Wentz to clinch the win for the Titans.

I’m pleased.

Jets defeat Dolphins 40-17

This game was a great example for anybody who said that Tua isn’t that good and that “anyone could run a Mike McDaniel offense.”

I’m not saying Tua is a top 5 QB, but this game was clear proof that you can’t just be any old Joe and win games in the NFL.

Buccaneers defeat Falcons 21-15

The roughing the passer call on Tom Brady was offensively bad, but c’mon now people.

It’s the Falcons. They wouldn’t have won that game. We should all know that by now.

Texans defeat Jaguars 13-6

I’m not going to lie to you.

I don’t think I saw one single moment of this game, and I was at a sports bar that had every game on TV before going home and watching Red Zone.

And even still, I couldn’t tell you anything that happened.

49ers defeat Panthers 37-15

A really good team beat a really bad team.

There ain’t too much to write about here.

Cowboys defeat Rams 22-10

I think it’s time to start wondering about the Rams…

I think the Cowboys are better than people think as an overall roster, but man the Rams have looked uuuugly so far this year.

Eagles defeat Cardinals 20-17

The Phillies swept St. Louis, the Eagles beat Arizona, and the Flyers really hate the Penguins.

Philly just doesn’t like birds.

Ravens defeat Bengals 19-17

Is there anyone who actually thought the Ravens weren’t going to win this game?

I mean that seriously. With over a minute left and only needing a field goal, is there a single soul on planet Earth who didn’t think Justin Tucker was going to win them that game?

If so, I’d really like to meet them.

Chiefs defeat Raiders 31-30

I know the NFL is leading more offensive and more towards the passing game, but the Broncos and Raiders offensive minded coaches are once again taking it too far by throwing far downfield when it’s only 4th and 1.

Running does exist! You can do it sometimes!

You could also maybe not design a play that leads your two wide receivers to run into each other, but what do I know?

Was It A Good Week?

I’m not even going to count the good games and bad games.

The Colts-Broncos game was maybe one of the worst NFL games I have ever seen.

It wasn’t even funny bad. It was just pathetic.

It was a bad week.

But fear not! This week kicks off with

checks notes

Commanders vs Bears.

Ho boy…
