MLS Takeaways: Week 16

Any big MLS news happen in the past week?

Nothing seems to be coming to mind…

Ah well. Let’s talk about the games, I guess!

Atlanta defeats DC United 3-1

We can talk about this game, and whatever that’s fine Atlanta won.

But Atlanta had a midweek game against LAFC and Brad Guzan turned back the clock and had 9 saves, almost half of them purely spectacular, to hold on for a 0-0 draw.

It was a fantastic performance, and one that will be talked about more than this win against D.C.

Charlotte draws Seattle 3-3

Do yourself a favor and watch the highlights from this game.

Both teams scored 3 goals while Seattle had 1.5 expected goals and Charlotte had 0.9.

Nothing but spectacular goals in this one.

Montreal defeats Minnesota 4-0

Seems like a long, long time ago that Minnesota was unbeaten in MLS play.

Road games are always tough, but this is a bad, bad loss.

New England defeats Miami 3-1

Miami continues to struggle and remains dead last in the Eastern Conference.

A terrible week, in which literally no good things happened for Miami.

Toronto draws Nashville 1-1

Another week and more dropped points for Toronto.

They seem committed to Bob, though. For better or worse.

Orlando defeats Colorado 2-0

My weekly plea for someone to save Robin Fraser from Colorado.

Columbus defeats Chicago 2-1

Only Chicago could be seconds away from a crucial point and lose it by a goal scored from the opposite end.

Just typical.

Houston defeats LAFC 4-0

I said last week that LAFC’s loss in the CCL Final could break their season as it had broken other MLS clubs season previously.

So far in their return, they’ve been blanked twice and got demolished by Houston.

Not a good start, but they’re still in great shape for the season overall.

Kansas City defeats Austin 4-1

I was wrong.

I said SKC should fire Peter Vermes and that this was a lost season, but they are arguably the hottest team in the league right now and continue to climb up the standings.

So congrats, SKC. You win.

I was wrong.

Real Salt Lake draws NYCFC 0-0

So, I didn’t really notice until today, but NYCFC is quietly having a terrible season.

They’re still in the playoff hunt, but this team is too talented to be flirting with the playoff line.

This ship has got to get fixed, and quickly.

San Jose defeats Philadelphia 2-1

Since the Quakes fired Matias Almeyda last year, they turned their season around and looked like a solid squad.

This year, things have been no different at all!

They’re a consistently good team in the West.

Vancouver draws Cincinnati 1-1

Cincy just keeps on trucking, but that’s a big point at the death by Vancouver to get something out of a game they had no business getting anything from.

St. Louis draws LA Galaxy 1-1

Speaking of crucial goals…

The Galaxy have already fired their general manager, and I’d be amazed if Greg Vanney still had a job if they had lost to St. Louis, even though St. Louis is a good squad.

But they snatched a point late, and Vanney lives another day.

Portland defeats Dallas 1-0

This was a week of amazing goals in MLS, from Charlotte to Houston to Chicago.

And the last game of the week, the last taste in everyone’s mouth, was an absolute snoozefest between Portland and Dallas.

What is this, an NFL Sunday?

So that’s it. 14 games played over the weekend and not significant news outside of that whatsoever.
