Five Formula 1 Winners & Losers: British Grand Prix
I know it’s said all the time, but the British Grand Prix really is one of the best every year.
The crowd is amazing. The racing is great. The track is awesome.
It’s just perfect.
But some people didn’t have such a good time this weekend.
With that, here are the winners and losers for the British Grand Prix.
Losers
5. Kevin Magnussen
What’s worse than starting terribly because your engine failed in qualifying?
Having the new engine also fail during the race.
4. Esteban Ocon
Ocon also had a very bad starting position, but this one wasn’t due to a mechanical fault. It was his own mistake.
A bad lock up before his flying lap meant he started from the back, and THEN his engine failed during the race.
So as equal of a bad weekend as Magnussen, but mostly his fault.
3. Ferrari
Charles Leclerc was right behind George Russell before the safety car and fighting with the British driver, but Ferrari decided to box Leclerc and lose track position for new tires.
Guess if Leclerc gained positions after that safety car.
Go ahead. Guess.
2. Lance Stroll
Just a putrid weekend from Lance Stroll, and it wasn’t a tremendous weekend for his teammate Fernando Alonso either.
The issue is, Alonso got points.
Stroll should not be finishing 14th in the Aston Martin. Even without a 5 second penalty, he still would’ve been 11th.
Not good.
1. Sergio Perez
All Red Bull racing want is a driver who will get points for Red Bull to win the constructors title but not compete with Max Verstappen to win the drivers title.
It was what Mercedes had with Valtteri Bottas, and it’s what Red Bull did have with Sergio Perez.
But they no longer have it.
Perez run of form right now is horrendous, and the reserve driver at Red Bull is a talented and hungry Daniel Ricciardo who has been with the team before, and Red Bull know he can get quality results while still not fighting Max.
Checo needs to step his game up, and quick.
Winners
5. Logan Sargeant
It still isn’t points for the American, but after a rough start to the season he got new upgrades on the car and needed results.
13th at Austria and 11th at Silverstone won’t show up on the points sheet, but it does show that he is improving as the Williams improves with him.
For a rookie, that’s all you can hope to see.
4. Lewis Hamilton
Not the perfect home race for Hamilton, but a great first stint and fortunate safety car got him onto the podium at Silverstone once again.
3. Alexander Albon
As I said above, the Williams is improving and Sargeant along with it, but Albon’s season can not be ignored.
Another fantastic weekend for the Thai driver, as he shows the rest of the grid he and Williams are beginning to mean business.
2. Lando Norris
What a weekend for Lando.
Norris with an incredible P2 in qualifying, an awesome start to get the lead and send the British crowd into a frenzy, and a great last stint to keep Hamilton behind on better tires to secure 2nd.
1. Oscar Piastri
But we come to expect those performances from Lando.
Last week, I said that Oscar Piastri was having a very, very difficult rookie season, and that it was magnified by the hype around him and all the drama surrounding Piastri last season.
He took absolutely no time to make me look stupid.
Piastri qualified 3rd for the race, and had a podium all but locked up before an unfortunate safety car.
Still, it was the first time in a very long time we saw exactly why this young Australian talent was so hyped up.
If that’s the start of something new for him and McLaren, it’s going to be very fun to watch.
