Far Cry Tier List

You may remember that about a year ago I made a tier list of the Call of Duty games.

If you don’t remember, that’s fine too it was a year ago. I barely remember last week.

But today I figured I’d go back to another tier list. This time with one of my favorite game franchises, Far Cry.

Let’s get going.

D Tier

Far Cry & Far Cry 2

This might be a little unfair, because both games were fine, so D tier seems rude.

But something has to go into D tier, and these were my least two favorite of the franchise.

And the malaria in Far Cry 2 that you had to deal with, while realistic for the setting, was incredibly, incredibly annoying.

C Tier

Far Cry Primal

A game set in the prehistoric times is an awesome idea, and quite frankly it’s a really fun game as well.

In a different world, it’d be one of the best.

But this is the Far Cry world, and it sounds like a cop out and you might not get it if you haven’t played it, but it just does not feel like a Far Cry game.

There’s no chaos to it. A Far Cry game needs some chaos.

Far Cry New Dawn

New Dawn is a game set in the nuclear aftermath of Far Cry 5, and it fixes the problem I had with 5 which was that 5 didn’t have much of a grind to it.

The issue is, this had way too much of a grind to it.

If I have to spend a majority of my time scavenging the map for supplies instead of following the story line, I’m going to lose interest.

It doesn’t help that the story wasn’t very memorable, either.

B Tier

Far Cry 6

This one’s going to be controversial.

Compared to the 3 main Far Cry’s before it, 6 does not hold a candle to them.

So why B tier?

Simple.

One of your animal companions is a wheelchair dachshund named Chorizo.

I do not care about the flaws in this game. Look at this damn dog.

I would die for Chorizo.

A Tier

Far Cry Blood Dragon

Spin off games should not find their way into A tier, but Blood Dragon is no ordinary spin off game.

It’s a Far Cry game but based around cheesy 80s movies.

It is the perfect example to give when someone asks why I love Far Cry so much.

It’s likely never going to be Game of the Year amongst critics. It’s never going to make you cry.

But it is so friggin fun.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 is my third favorite game in the series, which I know is controversial because it’s a lot of people’s favorite.

And I get it.

Jason is a great protagonist, Vaas is an incredible antagonist, and it has that usual Far Cry feel while you’re playing.

Drawbacks? The scenery isn’t exactly anything special. Just a normal tropical island.

And the ending choice is really not a difficult one to make.

You can either save all your friends who you have been trying to save this whole time, or stay with Citra.

Maybe it was a harder choice for others, but I never once thought to abandon my friends and stay with Citra.

But I do appreciate the game screwing the player who stays with Citra over by having her stab Jason to death to end the game.

Far Cry 5

And now my second favorite in the series.

The game takes place in rural Montana as you try to defeat a religious cult of doomsdayers preparing for the end, and it has almost everything you’d want in a Far Cry game.

There’s plenty of that typical Far Cry chaos in the open world, extremely charismatic villains, some really good humor within the game and a difficult choice at the end that leads to different endings to the game.

The only true downside to this game which keeps it from S tier is the lack of reason to truly experience the open world.

There’s no true grind. Perk points come easily, and you don’t need to level up your character to beat the game.

You could easily walk around only completing story missions and defeat the game fairly easily.

Which is a shame, because it’s one of the best open worlds in the Far Cry Series.

S Tier

Far Cry 4

The lone S tier Far Cry. The best one in the franchise.

Everything I’ve mentioned so far in this post can be found in this game.

You need to go hunting to improve your character and get him more guns and a bigger ammo pack, so you experience the full open world.

The antagonist, Pagan Min, is one of my favorite video game characters ever.

The Himalayan scenery is drop dead gorgeous.

But the real reason this game is my favorite in the series, is the realization at the end of the game that you’ve been playing it the wrong way this whole time.

The plot of the game is to help rebels take down the evil dictator that is Pagan Min, and by the end of the game you realize that you’ve actually been helping terrorists.

Pagan is on your side. He’s there to help you, while the people you’ve been working for are just trying to take over Kyrat for themselves.

Far Cry 3 and 5 have some amazing features that make them both games I truly love, but Far Cry 4 is the one that puts it all together.

Plus, if you listen to Pagan at the beginning of the game by waiting and enjoying the crab rangoon, you can beat the game in 15 minutes.

If anyone has any suggestions on things to write video game related, just let me know.

I’ll do anything.
