Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 6
It finally started to feel like fall in Maryland, and it was perfect for a great day of college football.
Let’s get into this weeks top 5.
5. Wyoming Cowboys
The Cowboys are now 5-1, and ended Fresno State’s 14 game win streak with a 24-19 win.
Not only that, but they are now firmly in the driver seat to win the Mountain West.
What a start to the year.
4. Caleb Williams
I normally put teams here.
In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever just put a single player here.
But Caleb Williams deserves it.
Because USC’s defense remains a complete disaster, and Lincoln Riley’s late game coaching was garbage as well.
As was his triple overtime 2 point conversion call.
A QB draw to the right when almost all the blockers were on the left? Disgusting.
But Caleb Williams found a way to get in and get the 2.
He possibly saved USC’s playoff chances singlehandedly.
3. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Yes, they should have lost.
If you don’t know why they should have lost, please look up the GT-Miami game highlights.
It’s amazingly stupid.
But, they didn’t!
And a big part of that is Miami screwing up, but another big part is Georgia Tech playing strong defense, and a great 26 second drive to get the lead at the last second.
It’s an impressive win, especially since they should have lost!
2. Louisville Cardinals
Louisville was off to a great 5-0 start under Jeff Brohm, but they were beating teams they should be beating. It wasn’t exactly a “Wow, Louisville is 5-0!” start to the year considering their opponents.
But on Saturday night they welcomed Notre Dame to town, and absolutely beat them down.
They forced Sam Hartman and company into 5 turnovers, and got the first statement win of the Brohm era.
This is what was missing when Satterfield was in town.
1. Oklahoma Sooners
I believed in Brent Venables and Oklahoma this year.
If you remember, I picked them to make the Big 12 title game.
And they started 5-0 with some nice wins, but much like Louisville, not a ton to be super impressed by.
That changed this weekend at Red River.
The Venables defense forced Quinn Ewers into 3 turnovers and had an excellent goal line stand, while Dylan Gabriel had a fantastic day for the OU offense.
It was the type of win that not only shows me the proof of concept for Oklahoma, but also gave me a realization.
The Sooners have a better chance to win a national championship with Brent Venables as head coach than they did with Lincoln Riley.
I have zero doubts about that.
