Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 6

For a week that looked like the noon games would be significantly better than the night games, the night games held their own.

Here is who impressed me most this weekend.

Honorable Mention: Texas Longhorns

I’m not going to put Texas in the top 5, because Oklahoma is really, really bad defensively.

Still, teams always seem to hold their own in rivalry games, and Texas completely demolished the Sooners.

That was brutal.

5. James Madison Dukes

It’s the Dukes’ first year in FBS, and it took them a whopping 5 games to be ranked in the AP top 25 poll.

That’s insane.

What a season they’re having.

4. Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee is better than LSU, but Death Valley ain’t an easy place to go and play. Especially with a new excitement towards LSU after Brian Kelly had the Tigers off to a 4-1 start.

But man. Tennessee showed they were for real on Saturday.

Especially considering they have a home game against Alabama this weekend. That LSU game could have easily led them into a trap.

Nope. 40-13 win.

Demolition.

3. Oregon State Beavers

Are you a Beaver Believer?

If not, you should be by now.

After their big guts move against Fresno State to get the win earlier in the season, they followed it up with an absurd last minute touchdown catch and grab that was shades of Stefon Diggs vs the Saints back in 2018.

The Beavers keep winning in fun ways.

2. Arizona State Sun Devils

Arizona State fired Herm Edwards after a loss to Eastern Michigan.

Their schedule then had them going against Utah, USC and Washington.

That’s a brutal stretch for an interim coach to have to deal with.

But the Sun Devils got a huge win over the #21 Washington Huskies, and while I’m not sure it’s going to turn their season around, it’s at least something to build off of for the future.

1. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Geoff Collins got fired in his 4th season at Georgia Tech, and the Yellow Jackets never won 2 games in a row.

Interim coach Brent Key has now coached two games for Georgia Tech. They played Pitt and Duke, two teams that were favored over the Yellow Jackets, and one of which was on the road.

They won both of them.

Was that really so hard, Geoff?
