Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 5

Photo by Matt Krohn from USA Today

While I still think the top 3 in college football are in a different class, it seems pretty clear that everyone below them is in a dog fight for that #4 spot five weeks in.

And that’s what makes college football so fun.

Here’s the top 5 for week 5.

Honorable Mention: Missouri Tigers

I can’t put them in the top 5 because I had 5 teams I was more impressed with this week, but I’d be remiss to point out how well Mizzou played against Georgia, and very easily could have won if a missed false start went their way.

Mizzou has struggled, so it’s hard to find a morale victory considering their overall struggles, but it was still a good performance.

5. Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas is 5-0!

And now they’re ranked!

And they’re deservingly hosting college gameday next week!

Seriously, Kansas vs TCU is going to be soooo fun next week. That’s a must watch game.

4. Tulane Green Wave

If you pay for the Split Zone Duo patreon, you may have heard their series of college programs who, for one reason or another, will never be what they once were.

Tulane is one of those schools, only Tulane didn’t seem to get the memo this year.

As if going into Houston and winning wasn’t enough, they did it with their backup quarterback as the regular starter Michael Pratt was out.

The Green Wave might very well end up in the AAC title game, and that’s amazing to see.

Louisiana could use a few great football teams.

3. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech is smack center in Atlanta, so they really should consistently be a good college football program, but for the past few years have shown that they just aren’t at that level.

And after firing Geoff Collins, it looked like this would be a year to get through before finding Collins replacement for next year.

Well, Georgia Tech didn’t get the memo! Because one week after Collins’ firing, they went into Acrisure Field and upset the Pitt Panthers.

Which made me happy.

Because I’m biased.

I won’t apologize for it.

2. Purdue Boilermakers

I’ll admit to my own mistakes.

Someone posted that Minnesota was on upset alert because they played Purdue. Purdue is the king of upsets.

And despite me knowing that, I ignored it.

Purdue doesn’t look very good this year and they were playing in Minnesota. I really did not think they had a shot.

And that is my own mistake. I should have seen this coming.

I’m sorry, Purdue Pete. I should have believed in you more.

1. TCU Horned Frogs

But there could really only be one option for the top spot this week.

We saw it with another purple team in college football, as Kalen DeBoer took over a talented UW team and found immediate success.

Well, this TCU team has talent. All it needed was a great coach (not that Gary Patterson wasn’t a great coach. It was just time for a change).

Sonny Dykes is that great coach.

TCU demolished Oklahoma. Completely destroyed them.

The Horned Frogs are 4-0 now and look like a legitimate contender in the Big 12.

I said it once already earlier, but seriously. TCU vs Kansas this week is a must watch game.

And they play at noon when I’ll be at the Purdue vs Maryland game so I can’t watch.

What the hell, Big 12?
