Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 4

All the eyes are towards next week, and rightfully so, but there was some excellent football on this past weekend too.

Never sleep on the “quiet” weekends of college football.

5. San Diego State Aztecs

Maybe Cal isn’t as good as we thought they were.

Even still, Sean Lewis had a difficult year one at SDSU, and they needed a bounce back season.

Welcoming an instate, undefeated Power 5 program to town and shutting them out 34-0 is a good way to kickstart that season.

It looks like year 2 will be much better than year 1 for Lewis.

4. Memphis Tigers

Memphis looked outclassed by Arkansas for the first parts of that game, down 28-10 at one point.

But the Tigers held Arkansas to 3 points in the second half, including a clutch fumble recovery with a minute or so left, to come roaring back and win 32-31.

The play that summarized this game the most was when facing a 3rd and 8, Arkansas needed a stop to get the ball back and a chance to win.

Instead, Memphis’ backup QB dragged multiple Razorbacks 8 yards to clinch the victory.

They simply overpowered them.

3. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Oklahoma State is bad.

Like, really bad.

But they should still beat Tulsa at home.

Tulsa didn’t see to get that memo on Friday night though, shutting down the Cowboys offense and winning 19-12 for their first win in Stillwater since 1951.

I don’t care how bad OK State is this year.

That’s a huge win for Tulsa.

2. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Tech came into this season with a very talented roster, and they were blowing the doors off of some really bad teams.

This was the first test for the Red Raiders, going into Utah and taking on the other Big 12 title contender Utah Utes.

It was a slugfest for a while, but Tech powered through at the end and pulled away for an easy win.

This was the first question they needed to answer, and they answered it in a big way.

1. Indiana Hoosiers

I said preseason that I thought Illinois would be the new Indiana.

A team that surprises everyone and makes the playoffs, due to a lightly easy schedule.

All they needed to do was beat Indiana of all teams, and 11-1 was very much so on the table.

Turns out, Indiana didn’t like being left out of the conversation, because this Indiana team is even better than last years.

This was a demolition in all three phases for the Hoosiers, beating down Illinois 63-10.

People last year thought Indiana were frauds.

Maybe they still do.

But they’re clearly not going away.
