Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 3

Three weeks have come and gone in the college football season, and it feels like we could be headed towards a year of chaos.

No team seems to stand out as the absolute best.

Buckle up, folks. This could get weird.

Here is this week’s top 5.

5. West Virginia Mountaineers

This isn’t bias. The Mountaineers finally beat arch rival Virginia Tech for the first time since 2003 (they’ve played once since 2006 before Saturday but still).

Throw in the fact that Virginia Tech entered the day ranked 15th, and that’s a very good win. A defining win for the Neal Brown era.

Ok maybe it’s a little biased but screw y’all this is my own website I can do what I want.

4. Western Michigan Broncos

Like I said, I’m allowed to be biased.

But in all seriousness, there was some confidence when it came to Pitt football this year with a weaker Coastal division and any school having the chance to go to the ACC Championship game.

And yet here come the Broncos. Putting up 44 on the road to get the upset victory.

West Virginia beat Virginia Tech and Pitt lost to a G5 school.

It was a great weekend for me.

3. Michigan State Spartans

To say that the cupboard was bare for Mel Tucker when he arrived at Michigan State would be an understatement.

Despite that, in only his second year, the Spartans are 3-0 after going on the road to Miami (who may seem a TOUCH overrated) and dominated the Canes.

Tucker did a great job at Colorado so this isn’t surprising, but it’s still nice to see. The Big 10 needs more top tier teams.

The Spartans obviously aren’t there yet. But they’re on the right path.

2. Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss played Louisville on Labor Day and the takeaway from pretty much everyone was “Man, Louisville is bad.”

I think it’s time to start saying “Man, Ole Miss is really good.”

Tulane is not a push over team. They went toe to toe with Oklahoma and almost pulled off the upset, in Norman no less.

And Ole Miss just threw them around all game long.

The Rebels are legit.

1. Fresno State

UCLA looked like the team to get Los Angeles back into the limelight of college football.

After all, their early season trouncing of LSU was a great start for the Bruins.

But they weren’t prepared for an unreal, gutsy performance from Jake Haener.

With 450 yards and two touchdowns, the Washington transfer helped his Bulldogs pull off an impressive upset of the Bruins, and brought the Chip Kelly renaissance back to Earth.

And good for Haener. Having to transfer from your first choice school isn’t easy, but it’s hard to get solid quarterback play in that incredible Washington offense.

Yep! That Washington offense definitely wouldn’t only score 7 points at home against Montana!

Not a chance…
