Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 2

All week, I kept hearing how bad this week of college football was going to be.

I can only assume the people who said that don’t actually like college football, because there were tons of great matchups and games this weekend.

But who is in this weeks top 5?

Honorable Mention: Northern Colorado Bears

I’d be remiss to not mention the Northern Colorado Bears, who caught what appeared to be the game winning touchdown to upset Colorado State and get a huge win for the program, before officials inexcusably overturned it to be an incomplete pass.

Was the pass incomplete? Probably, to be fair.

But there was not one single camera view that showed it was definitively incomplete, and it was called a touchdown on the field.

The Bears got screwed out of a win they had earned.

5. Missouri State Bears

Welcome to FBS, Missouri State!

One week after they made their FBS debut and got destroyed by USC, the Bears traveled to Huntington, West Virginia to take on Marshall.

And the Bears came back from down 20-7 with a minute left in the third quarter to 21-20 and get their first ever FBS win.

Welcome to the party.

4. Ohio Bobcats

Ohio didn’t play that well.

That sounds like an insult, but I genuinely mean it as a compliment.

Parker Navarro made some plays with his feet, but threw three interceptions around midfield which gave West Virginia great field position.

And if you told me that Ohio would play relatively poorly to what they can be against a Power 5 program, I would assume that they’d lose.

But Ohio got the win thanks to a tremendous defensive line performance, forcing the Mountaineers to go three and out 7 times in the game.

If that was a poor game from them, they should breeze through the MAC if they play well.

3. Army Black Knights

Army, coming off of a conference championship, started their season with an embarrassing loss to Tarleton State.

But instead of that being a sign to come, the Black Knights went out and beat Kansas State 24-21 on the road.

Now, Kansas State has a bunch of problems on their own at the moment, but that is still a huge bounce back win for Army.

2. Mississippi State Bulldogs

I don’t think it’s controversial to say that Arizona State is better than Mississippi State.

I believed that before the game, and I still believe it now.

But you don’t poke a hornets nest with a stick.

After video was shown of Arizona State practicing with two tiny cowbells, and ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham said there were no hotels in the area, implying that it’s such a Podunk town, the Starkville faithful were rabid from the start, and young QB Sam Leavitt couldn’t handle it.

By the time Arizona State woke up, it was already 17-0, and even though they came roaring back, the Bulldogs won the game late on a 58 yard touchdown with 30 seconds left.

The Bulldogs have already matched their win total from last year, and have shown they are not going to be some pushover to the rest of the SEC.

1. USF Bulls

Two weeks of football, two weeks of top 5 appearances for the USF Bulls.

It was obvious after they dismantled Boise State that the Bulls had a good defense, but then they went into the Swamp and held Florida to only one touchdown, and mucked the game up enough to get the ball last, get one good drive, and get the victory as time expired.

They are the clear cut G5 playoff favorite, and they carry this momentum into a week 3 game against a very good Miami Hurricanes team.

Surely they won’t do it for the third week in a row, though.

Right…?
