Brian’s College Football Top 5: Week 1
Labor Day weekend is done and dusted, and that means the first week of college football is officially over.
So it’s time to bring back the top 5!
As another reminder if you’re new here, this is not the five best teams. These are my top 5 teams of the week simply from either being impressed by them, or maybe even impressed by how terrible they were!
Looking at you, Iowa.
So let’s get into it!
5. Oregon State Beavers
Is beating Idaho State really that impressive?
Nah, not really.
But their main rival Oregon only beat Idaho by 10.
That has to feel somewhat good, right Beavs?
4. Nebraska Cornhuskers
There was no doubt Nebraska was going to beat UTEP.
But Scotty Waldron, UTEP’s new head coach, is a good offensive mind. I figured UTEP would put up some points.
They scored 7.
Nebraska absolutely shut them down and blew the doors off of them.
It’s weird to be impressed by a blowout that was supposed to be a blowout, but I was impressed.
3. USC Trojans
USC is going to have a good offense under Lincoln Riley. That’s just how it always goes.
Their issue was their defense, and it needed to be improved dramatically.
At least on Sunday night against LSU, it was.
They played very physical against a quality Tigers team, and got the win to start their year off on a good note.
2. Boston College Eagles
When Georgia Tech ran over Florida State’s defense last week, I wasn’t completely stunned.
After all, Georgia Tech’s offensive line is really good!
But Boston College doing the exact same thing? In Tallahassee?
That’s a huge win for Bill O’Brien to start his BC tenure.
1. Vanderbilt Commodores
All offseason long, people were ranting and raving about how good Virginia Tech was going to be, and Vanderbilt simply isn’t good.
But Diego Pavia, the New Mexico State transfer, came into Nashville and immediately made his mark as a Commodore, upsetting Virginia Tech and getting a huge overtime victory for Vandy.
Vandy likely won’t go bowling simply from how hard their schedule is, but this is a hell of a start.
